BCAA vs EAA: what's the difference and which one to choose?

What are BCAA and EAA?
EAAs are the 9 essential amino acids that the body does not produce (leucine, isoleucine, valine, lysine, methionine, phenylalanine, threonine, tryptophan, histidine). BCAAs are a subgroup of these essential amino acids: leucine, isoleucine, and valine — they represent a large fraction of the amino acids present in muscle.
Leucine is the anabolic trigger (activates mTOR), and BCAAs can be used as energy during exercise, helping to reduce central fatigue. However, without the remaining EAAs available, muscle building cannot be sustained.
Functional differences
- BCAAs: signal protein synthesis (leucine), serve as muscle fuel, and can reduce central fatigue/DOMS.
- EAAs: deliver the "complete package" to form new proteins — superior for long-term recovery and growth.
When fasting or with low protein intake, EAAs have a clear advantage; with already high daily protein, BCAAs shine more as intra-workout support.
What science says
- Isolated BCAAs activate synthesis but do not maintain it without the other EAAs — protein balance tends to fall short of ideal.
- EAAs (even in moderate doses) elevate protein synthesis above baseline and promote a positive protein balance.
- Intra-workout BCAAs can reduce central fatigue and mitigate delayed onset muscle soreness, especially during long training sessions.
Which one to choose?
- Hypertrophy/recovery objective: prioritize EAAs (or complete protein).
- Performance & training fatigue: BCAAs before/during can help with energy and muscle comfort.
- Restricted/vegetarian diets: EAAs cover limiting amino acids and protect lean mass.
- Budget & taste: BCAAs tend to be cheaper and easier to flavor; EAAs are more complete.
